Throughout this unit I have learned a lot about myself as a mathematician. I learned that I do not like to work in groups, that whenever I do worksheets I like to speed through them without stopping to look at the content and I breeze past places in problems where a lot of other people struggle.
Last year was very different in structure to what we do now. In geometry, we were given a worksheet, a lesson and a deadline. That was better in some ways because we covered a lot of content and got in a lot of practice in a very short amount of time. We worked in small groups of our choosing or individually when called for, and we worked off of each other because we all knew the same things and worked on the same level.
It’s very different in this current math class because we all know different things from going through different schools and programs. We can’t just breeze through worksheets because the lesson has to be taught so people who are new to it can get a grasp on the concept. Yes, this is good for people new to what I personally learned throughout last year.
For me, it’s very hard for me to work in a group in class, but it has given me a new sense of the concept patience. Patience to when people just don’t understand what I think to be very basic and simple equations turn out to be very confusing to people who haven’t been exposed to it before. Seeing as people aren’t at the same place in math a lot of the times, it becomes very hard for me to be challenged by problems and challenged by myself to strive for a better knowledge.

When I started this unit, I thought it was going to have a lot more individual research involved in it, but once we got into the area models I realized that we were really learning probability. When providing health insurance we must be sure that everyone is covered and no one is being cheated out of their money. I still don’t know that much about health insurance and how it works, I only know about how to determine value and find fairness in problems. I will now have more insight when I want to get health insurance or any insurance. I have learned how to create fair games and situations where everyone has an equal chance of winning; this has also given me insight into socialization. If everyone was given an equal chance of winning the game of life, we would have equality, but since there are systems in place making some people lower or higher in the ladder, we can’t see ourselves or others as equals. There are different ways to ensure fairness, whether changing the reward or changing the probability. I have learned to work a lot faster and find shortcuts to get answers. I have been working independently for most of this unit, and it has allowed me to get through worksheets and work on other things in this class.
